The history of the tirth

From the background of the Samprati era to the tirthdham as it stands today — stated as far as it is established, and named as tradition where it is tradition.

The age of Emperor Samprati

In Jain history the name of Emperor Samprati is bound to a vast programme of temple building and idol consecration. Tradition places him as a successor of Emperor Ashoka and a disciple of Acharya Shri Suhastisuri. Idols attributed to his period are still worshipped in temples across western and central India.

This is the broad historical background against which the mulnayak enshrined here is traditionally placed.

The mulnayak

The idol of Shri Adinath Dada

The mulnayak, Shri Adinath Dada, is held to be of the Samprati era and around 2,300 years old. That dating rests on traditional belief and oral attribution rather than on any published archaeological study, and we present it as such.

This is common with ancient Jain idols. In devotional terms the antiquity of the image is not in question; in historical terms we state only what tradition has handed down.

On the banks of the Kshipra

Mahidpur is an old town in Ujjain district, set near the Kshipra — the same river on whose banks the centuries-old traditions of Ujjayini rest. This part of Malwa has long been home to a settled Jain community.

The locality in which the tirth stands is called Kila Mehidpur, and it is from this that people here affectionately call the temple “Kila Mandir”.

The idea of the tirthdham

The tirthdham was conceived by P.P. Acharya Shri Sagaranand Surishwarji M.S. The thought was simple and born of compassion: for devotees who cannot travel to Palitana, Girnar, Abu and Shikharji, let those tirths be established here, in one complex, in the order of the yatra.

The lineage that guided it

The work received the blessings of P.P. Acharya Shri Suryodaysagar Surishwarji M.S., and moved forward under the inspiration and steady guidance of P.P. Acharya Shri Sagarchandrasagar Surishwarji M.S.

The chaturmas, the discourses and the presence of the gurus were what held the community to a task of this size over many years.

108 Adinath Bhagwan together

The most distinctive achievement here is that 108 Adinath Bhagwan were enshrined together for the first time anywhere in the world. One hundred and eight images of a single Tirthankara in one place — it is this that marks Mahidpur out on the Jain map.
